Los Angeles 1970 - 1990: Exploring the myth of California through materials and subject

Panelists
: Lita Albuquerque, Chuck Arnoldi, Laddie John Dill, Ned Evans, Andy Moses
Moderator: Rani Singh, former curator, Getty Museum and Gagosian

Material and process played a prominent role in defining Los Angeles as a counter market to New York. By the 1970s, artists had embraced the use of resin, glass, and plastics, each distinctly connected to the sub-cultures, landscape, and industries of the “California Cool” lifestyle.

Each panelist takes raw materials, exploits, and challenges their limits creating a personal identity and aesthetic. The resulting objects often blur the line between painting and sculpture while exploring the resources of California.

California Ethos: Conceptualism and Literalism

Panelists: Don Bachardy, Gregory Wiley Edwards, Astrid Preston, Allen Ruppersberg
Moderator: Rachel McCullah Wainwright, BMoA Curator of Collections and Exhibitions

The idea of “California” has long resonated with the creative class, an ethos widely explored in the vernacular of the west coast. However, amidst the cultural and social changes of the 1960s, conceptual art emerged, challenging the parameters of traditional modes of artmaking and emphasizing the concept and process. These philosophies interrupted and informed coexisting traditional practices, resulting in many artistic approaches to digesting the California experience.
