In 1969 Steven Arnold and a troupe of uninhibited performers and artists began The Nocturnal Dream Show, a series of midnight movies at the Palace Theatre in San Francisco. What started as a place for emerging film students to premier their experimental films later evolved into an elaborate underground scene of impromptu performances and full-blown stage productions. Concluding in 1972, the short history of the Nocturnal Dream Shows provides endless inspiration for an evening of kitsch, decadence, and panache.   

The Lineup

The evening begins with a screening of the documentary film Steven Arnold: Heavenly Bodies (2019) directed by Vishnu Dass and produced by Joan Agahanian Quinn at 6:30 PM. Three portraits of Quinn by Arnold appear in our current exhibition On the Edge.

Steven Arnold, an exhibiting artist in BMoA’s current exhibition On The Edge: Los Angeles Art 1970s – 1990s from the Joan and Jack Quinn Family Collection, was a prolific multimedia artist and protégé of Spanish modernist Salvador Dali. Narrated by Anjelica Huston and directed by Vishnu Dass, Heavenly Bodies explores Arnold’s dreamlike world and influential body of work.

Our annual masquerade party follows the film screening at 8 PM. Enjoy live DJ sets by Cat & DJ Chuck One, and inspired cocktails by Tiki Ko available for purchase.
